Banko Japanese Teapot: Irokyu 170cc

This compact Banko-yaki teapot features Irokyu Kiln’s original “Diamond Cut” finish. The hand-faceted surface catches the light beautifully, giving the rounded form a distinctive texture and quiet elegance.

Made from unglazed Banko clay, the teapot has a warm purple-brown tone characteristic of traditional shidei clay. According to the maker, the reduction-fired clay helps bring greater depth and richness to brewed tea, making this teapot especially well suited for Japanese green tea and ripe pu-erh tea.

With continued use, the unglazed clay gradually develops a soft, natural sheen, allowing the appearance of the teapot to deepen and mature over time.

About Banko Ware

Banko ware is produced primarily in Yokkaichi and Komono in Mie Prefecture. Its history dates to the middle of the Edo period, and it was designated a Traditional Craft of Japan in 1979.

Banko teapots are especially recognized for their characteristic purple-brown shidei clay. Because the surface is left unglazed, it gradually develops a richer color and gentle luster through regular use.
